New UN procurement scheme hopes to deliver harvest for the world
The UN is set to launch a new procurement plan which will revolutionise the way food is purchased and distributed through its World Food Programme (WFP).
Under the new ‘Purchase for Progress’ scheme the UN will buy food directly from some of the world’s poorest regions and before redistributing it where it’s most needed.
At present, the majority of the food provided for the WFP is purchased from developed countries such as the US and India.
The £42 million plan is being funded through a public-private partnership between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Howard G.Buffett Foundation and the Belgian government.
“The world’s poor are reeling under the impact of high food and fuel prices, and buying food assistance from developing world farmers is the right solution at the right time,” said WFP executive director Josette Sheeran.
