Environmental calling gives BT green light
BT is making good progress in ensuring that environmental considerations form an integral part of its procurement strategy, the company’s head of environment and climate change has said.
Donna Young said that BT was working extensively with its own suppliers to reduce their carbon footprint, and the carbon footprint of the products and services they supply to the company.
“In addition to building requirements into our procurement contracts that consider the environmental impact of products from manufacture to disposal, we are also surveying our suppliers to ascertain whether they have a climate change plan in place,” Young said.
BT, which last year announced ambitious plans to spend £250m building wind farms, has already surveyed more than 1,800 of its largest suppliers and graded them on their progress.
“For some technology contracts, where the need to deliver the lowest carbon product or service is critical, then only our best performing suppliers will be chosen as partners,” she said.
BT claims that its One IT project has enabled it to save around 3,110 metric tonnes of carbon per year.
