EU announces fresh cost cutting measures for a mobile Europe
The EU looks set to further cut the cost of mobile phone calls on the continent by announcing plans to reduce the fee operators charge each other for using their networks.The latest in series of measures aimed at slashing the cost of making calls in Europe, comes after the region's telecoms watchdog published new guidelines aimed at harmonising so-called 'termination fees' across all EU countries by 2011.
At present, there is a wide-ranging discrepancy in the costs charged by operators for handling calls from another, leading to mobile calls being far more expensive that fixed-line calls in the EU.
EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said: "The consumer pays the price for these gaps between national regulatory policies."
The new regulations, which will come into force in 2011, will, the Commission estimates, make calls 70 per cent cheaper.
