Public sector procurement set for overhaul
A new pan-European procurement infrastructure is being built by the European Union which will make it easier to exchange electronic invoices between public and private sector organisations.
The ultimate aim of the Pan European Public Procurement online (Peppol) project is to make public sector procurement more efficient and transparent and will help European companies compete on a more level playing field for public sector work.
Jari Tavi, chief technology officer at Basware, which is acting as an electronic procurement software expert for the project, says that the project will bring a saving of up to 20%; the equivalent of €300bn.
The infrastructure is expected to be in place by 2010.
