US-giant confident on sustainability target
Wal-Mart’s sustainability chief believes the company is on the road to improving the fuel efficiency of its truck fleet by 25 percent this year.
Speaking at a conference on climate change at the British Embassy, Matt Kistler, senior vice president of sustainability for Wal-Mart, said that the retailer also planned to introduce hybrid trucks into its fleet of more than 7,000 trucks in late 2008.
"With gas at $4 a gallon, we're keenly working on reducing costs," Kistler told delegates.
As part of the company’s drive to increase fuel efficiency, Wal-Mart has reduced the size of its diesel tanks in addition to fitting its fleet with more fuel-efficient tyres.
"I think we're on plan to hit the target" of 25 percent increased fuel efficiency by the end of 2008, Kistler said. "We're hoping to roll out some more things."
Wal-Mart has said its long-term goal is to use only renewable energy, while creating zero waste.
The company has also challenged its suppliers to remove non-renewable energy from their operations.
