The Week That Was

The week that was: 15 Apr 08 - 22 Apr 08

It’s safe to say that Boeing need another delay to the production of their Dreamliner aircraft like most of us need root canal surgery. So imagine the company’s surprise when a German magazine published an article claiming that Boeing’s customers faced another delivery ‘surprise’. According to Focus, US certification issues were in danger of derailing an already disastrous schedule by a further three to six months. Given recent events, Boeing’s overstretched PR machine gave the news typically short shrift, although if the new does prove to be correct, they must be tempted to jump on the nearest plane.

Figure of the week - £510 million – The amount saved on packaging by Nestlé's sustainability programme between 1991 and 2006.

Have biofuels had their day? Well, as a London conference prepares to discuss what is fast becoming a thorny issue, two South American leaders certainly appear to think so. The presidents of both Bolivia and Peru yesterday told the UN that the continued emphasis on their production was contributing to the escalating cost of food and was threatening to cause irreparable harm to some of the world’s most impoverished people. Bolivian premier Evo Morales told delegates that a number of South American countries were pillaging natural resources in their quest to develop biofuels – some presidents, he said (leaving no room for ambiguity), “did not understand what they were talking about.”
