The Week That Was
The week that was: 20 May 08 - 27 May 08
Truckers aren’t renowned for their patience and, after 12 months of non-stop fuel-rises they appear to have reached breaking point, as anyone travelling along the M4 corridor from Wales to London today will be witnessing. In protest at the soaring cost of petrol and diesel, hauliers are travelling in convoy to the capital as part of a campaign aimed at delivering an “essential user” rebate for HGV drivers. If it’s successful then CPO’s will be toasting their efforts – although those travelling on the M4 today may take a little longer to raise their glasses.
Quote of the week – “By making sure their systems work together, member states are helping European businesses to win public sector contracts anywhere in the EU," – Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, explains why a Europe-wide project linking procurement systems could create a truly ‘single market’.
Procurement Leaders regulars will have read a recent interview with Detlef Schultz, the global supply chain management director at Vodafone, where he outlined the impact that supply chain transformation had had on the world’s largest mobile phone company by turnover. And if proof was needed to illustrate the fact then results issued today appear to provide it. The company has announced pre-tax profits of £8.9 billion – just two years after recording a record loss for a UK firm (a trifling £14.9bn). That’s quite some turnaround and we certainly won’t begrudge Mr Schultz a glass of something cold and a cigar this evening.
