The Week That Was

Posted: Wednesday, July 02, 2008, 10:02AM

The week that was: 24 June 08 - 1 July 08

Have your noticed your shipments taking longer to reach their final destination? Procurement Leaders has done some sniffing around and found that companies are beginning to instruct the drivers and pilots of their planes, trucks and cars to drive/fly slower to conserve oil. Easyjet has already cut its flying speeds on some of its routes by two per cent (I thought it took me longer to get to Spain at the weekend), and other look set to follow their go-slow. More worryingly, however, some of the UK’s major train companies are looking into the idea – Procurement Leaders mistakenly thought they had implemented a similar strategy years ago.

Figure of the week – $2m – the amount paid by a Chinese businessman to have lunch with Warren Buffett……….no honestly.

We’re always reaching for the stars here at Procurement Leaders but the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA) have well and truly trumped us. The organisations have just launched the procurement of the first complete European satellite navigation system. The project, which should be completed by 2013 will see 30 dedicated navigation satellites launched into space. With a budget of £3.4bn we predict that applications to join the ESA procurement team will rocket.
